Although a number of men and women actually study martial arts, many more are familiar with the moves and styles because they’ve seen plenty of movies that display them. Although the first martial arts motion pictures showcased Kung Fu, Steven Seagal has made popular one more Asian martial art -the one referred to as Aikido. It is easily one of the best and also most popular martial arts in the United States these days. During the 1940s, Aikido was originally started in Japan, and it is packed with history and tradition.

Morihei Ueshiba, the founding father of Aikido, came into this world on December 14, 1883, and what altered his life was watching his dad get vandalized by local thugs. He became driven to get retribution against the thugs and become as powerful as he could. By applying himself faithfully, he grew to become a competent and dreaded martial artist. Aside from unarmed fighting strategies such as jujitsu, he perfected the use of weapons like the sword and spear. He discovered that he was not content with his skills, even though his abilities were very impressive. As opposed to just focusing on physical training, he also wanted to incorporate a spiritual component into it. As he he studied religion, he continued to refine his martial arts abilities too.

Aikido was born out of a synthesis of martial arts and spirituality that Ueshiba put together as time passes. The original name that he gave this martial art was Aikibudo, but later on modified it to Aikido in the 1940s. It had a style that was rather different, utilizing techniques from spear and sword fighting, in addition to different styles of jujitsu and aiki-jujitsu. The foundation of Aikido is harmonizing opposing forces, but it’s an effective form of self defense in any event. Joint locks and throws are employed, but the motions are fluid and natural, with the practitioner focusing on staying centered constantly. The goal of Aikido is being in a position to guard yourself effectively while imposing as little harm as possible on your assailant.

Aikido was made to be adaptable, so it is not a single-minded dogma but open to a variety of interpretations. Though it has origins in different martial arts, the primary goal of Aikido is to create peace of mind in the practitioner. By combining spirituality and physical training, Ueshiba developed a new and effective art form. Though his original purpose was retribution, as he matured he desired to use martial arts to make the world more peaceful.

Aikido is today gaining a wider following everywhere, and in the United States particularly. With his flicks, Steven Seagal has been the most popular in displaying the power and harmony of Aikido to everyone. If you’re interested in learning Aikido, there are now many dojos that teach it all over the world.
